One of the greatest midfielders of the generation, Frank Lampard retired on 2nd February 2017 after the illustrious football career of 21 years with the majority of his club career on Chelsea Football Club. Not many strikers have scored the numbers of goals he has scored playing from the midfield. He was a complete footballer. He not only scored goals but also created many. He always possessed an attacking threat although being deployed on creative and defensive midfield roles. He was a sort of player who always made his presence felt on the pitch. He was a versatile box-to-box player and was capable of playing from any position in the midfield. He was such an amazing player that he would have strengthened any teams.
Sir Alex Ferguson on Lampard reaching 200 goal mark with Chelsea:
The guy has had a great career. I must say we looked at him when he was at West Ham as a young player and I maybe regret not having done it. Where else could I get 200 goals?
Starting the career from West Ham United in 1995 and playing for the club for 6 years, he was attracted by Chelsea Football Club where he spent his majority of the football career, and he was at his peak while he played for Chelsea. You generally don’t talk about goals while you talk about the midfielder, but Frank Lampard had a great insight into goals which need to be mentioned every time you talk about him. He scored 39 goals for West Ham United. He is Chelsea’s all-time top goalscorer with staggering 211 goals, out of which 147 came in the Premier League. You give him space 30 yards away from goal, 9/10 times he’s going to shoot. He was not only a great goalscorer but also the scorer of great goals. 41 of his Premier League goals were scored from outside the box which is a record in Premier League. Apart from 147 goals in the Premier League, he also has 102 assists on his name, which proves his involvement in the attack.
His club success mainly came during his Chelsea career. He was the major part of the Chelsea squad that won three Premier League titles, four FA cups, two League Cups, a Champions League, and a Europa League. He not only had club success, but his individual honors are also notable:
Premier League Player of The Season 2004-2005
UEFA midfielder of the Year 2008
FIFA Player of the Year Silver Award 2005
Ballon d’Or Silver Award 2005
Chelsea Player of The Year – 3 times
Premier League Team of The Year – 3 times
Premier League Player of The Decade 2001-2010
*only includes Major Honors
He also played for Manchester City in the season 2014/15 and scored an emotional goal against his former side Chelsea. He scored 8 goals for Manchester City. He then played for MLS side New York City and scored 15 goals.
Frank Lampard made an international debut on 1999, and since then earned 106 caps. He is highest scoring English midfielder with 29 goals. He played alongside English veterans, Gerrard, Scholes, Beckham, Ferdinand, Owen, and Rooney. He was on an English side that deserved to win the major tournament, but the star-studded English side was unable to impress on the major tournament. He was awarded England Player of the Year twice.
A great role model for people, a hardworking man, a great personality, Frank Lampard has done enough to be remembered forever in the football history. You will be missed.
Thank you for the memories, Frank Lampard.
